October things

The warm days seem to be behind us, mur.  We haven't had a lot going on, and yet, we keep slightly busy.
No matter how many times we tell them that you can't really climb a bush they don't listen... now Miri is in on it too.  :P
We don't usually bother with flu shots... but... given the craziness of this year, I decided it might not be a bad idea.  I had them all prepped for shots, just in case, but the Flumist is available again so they got a reprieve!  They were all so relieved it was just liquid in their nose.  We got the promised bribe Pinky's anyway, because they were so brave.
The problem with the flumist is that it is more likely to cause an immune response, and poor Cadence ended up running a fever for a few hours and throwing up.  Buuuutttt... we didn't get shots!
Oh you know, just ripping up a kleenex when I should be sleeping.
There's a nice sandbox 5 feet away....
The girls enjoyed the Koch Weiner Roast... and got very dirty.  😛
Emmy wanted me to do her hair like mine.  She looked way too grown up.
Leaf pile!
So a random sewing project that I love (and Bob literally laughs out loud every time I put it on)- a 1910 wrap cape!  It's from a free pattern, so you too can make one... you do have to draw the pattern out from a grid so feel free to borrow the one I drafted.  :P  Also, it's really hard to take pictures of it on a hanger and even harder on me; perhaps I'll get Bob to stop laughing long enough to give you the full picture.
Silly girls on a stump.
Emmy:  I'm going to climb this tree!  Miriel: pulls her down.
Mom gave me Grandma Schlipf's project notebook from a Clothing class she took as a teen.
Flipping through it, this fabric sample looked really familiar. I was convinced that I had that fabric!
So I went looking through my scraps and I don't have that exact fabric, but I do have 3+ very similar pink 1930's reproduction fabrics.
And I love this skirt.  Can we go back to 30's fashion please?
She also had to do samples of different mending techniques and I was inspired to try darning a small tear in a shirt.  Not too bad for a first attempt and it's held up through 2 washes now!  ha.  Basically I'm turning into Marjorie...
Internet rabbit trails introduced the girls to the story of the Titanic and they were fascinated and asked so. many. questions.  This Eyewitness book from the Library has been poured over many times. Haha.  Strange children, but yay for learning history!
I took the girls to the farm for combine rides, and on the way there we ended up driving behind a combine.  As a general rule, I don't pass farm equipment unless they move over to a safe spot: it's dangerous for both of you, they're wider than you think (also wider than they think), and a few extra minutes of driving isn't the end of the world.   Every year people die and equipment gets destroyed by people who can't be patient and drive safely around farmers... so since people were starting to fly around BOTH of us and I was getting angry at stupid people and Twigs Market was right there we stopped in for a few minutes to look at the animals. (I'll get off my soapbox now.)
When we got to the farm the fridge was making a terrible racket that Dad didn't have time to investigate.  So.  I found a recipe stuck in the fan.  Beef tongue is evil, obviously, and will try to break your fridge.  Also, I may have to look into refrigerator repair as a second career.
Miri was very quietly playing all by herself upstairs.
The line for Grandma's grocery store was pretty long.
It was a pretty windy afternoon at the field but they didn't seem to mind.
I sent Emmy and Cadence to the combine first, and then we had to wait a while for the semi- poor Dad, I'm sure they talked his ear off and touched everything in the cab. Just chilling in the van with an ear of corn.
Our turn!  I handed Miri up before me so she was a little bit sad... she must have thought I wasn't coming along.  At one point, Troy came over the radio, "your kids are shelling corn into their cup holders"  *sigh* So they were.
While we were waiting for a ride, I tried to be like Hannah and make corn husk dolls- very rudimentary, but they look sort of doll like.  :)
Oh hey, I know how light switches work and it's my favorite thing to carry the stool around and turn them all off.
I got to go to Kirk and Lexi's church shower one evening.  Miriel got to come with me, the other three stayed home and did piano lessons.
I am at it again.  Here's the before picture with a cute helpful model.... 30 year old shower doors that never look clean because they are etched from years of hard water and cleaners.  They're also not clean because I don't clean them very often... because they never look clean. It's a great excuse.
I thought ahead since it's never possible to start and finish a project the same day- Bob is not impressed with my choice of temporary shower curtain.  hehe.  Someday I shall have an entire Chemistry themed bathroom. It was fortuitous though because we hit an installation snag with the new doors.
Cecily made a fall scavenger hunt for them to do one afternoon.
These will perhaps someday be end tables.  Right now, I think I'm done trying to fix resin mistakes only to create other problems with the finish.... woot.  They do look cool if you stand back and squint!
A random 80 degree day is the perfect time to pull out the croquette set!  So idyllic, it's a good thing pictures don't have sound and you can't hear the bossing, and the frustration, and the meddling, and the wicket pulling....
They were even fighting over who got to carry s'more kits to the neighbors later than afternoon.  *sigh*
Oh look, it's the Titanic!  They might be obsessed.  There are worse things. Maybe?
Little miss inquisitive swiped a pat of butter.  And ate it.
Bob and I got to go to potluck- out to eat for maybe the first time since.... December?  We couldn't remember.  I mean, it's not like I just love to cook or anything, we are both anti-social enough and the kids are not fun at restaurants soooo.... ordering pizza, drive thru, not so much going out. :D
My cousin Cristina got baptized last Sunday.  It was really good to be there, and it felt really good to visit a different church again.  :P  We just showed up for the baptism service, ate lunch with them, and then spent the evening at the farm since Michelle and Nathan were home.
Gideon and Aurelia came over for supper.  The duplo Titanic sank, sad day.
Blessings.

Everydayness

It feels like we've had a quiet couple of weeks. Other than a birthday, we've enjoyed a lot of ordinary days.
We have the best neighbors... Marci got roped (pun intended) into twirling the jump rope one afternoon. :D
Oh, you know, just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful weather on the stump....
Miri likes the sandbox.  And look! She's wearing shoes!
When we cut down the redbud tree almost 3 years ago, Dad saved some slices for me so I could "use them for a craft."  Well, I finally found a project...
I've been reading the Hobbit to the girls and they are loving it.  Bilbo (with Sting) is on the left and that's Gollum on the right in his boat with the ring.  (Also, duplos are the best toys ever.)
We got to spend an evening in Gridley at Steve and Renee's.
Riding cars in the shed...
...learning how to play croquet
Cecily caught on pretty fast and ended up winning!
These two barely stop moving.
Miriel really wished she could drive the car too!
Emmy decided one afternoon that she was going to learn to ride her bike without training wheels, and she did.
Might as well do your homework outside on the swing.
We got to visit Tori's puppies!  We are not getting a puppy, I still don't want animals in the house, and they really can't be outside in town, so.  We'll settle for visiting.  Miri was very interested.
Until they started nipping her fingers, then she was not so excited.
Cecily was a little unsure, they were full of energy that afternoon.
Emmy finally was brave and held a sleepy puppy.
She was fine as long as they weren't jumping or chasing her.
Cecily warmed up enough to pick them up and move them around. Miri was funny- she was trying to sit on that crate all by herself and the puppy would try and climb up next to her.  Miri would reach over and try and push it off.
I'm not sure where Cadence was, she was in and out and on the swings.  She was pretty excited that she got to help "my Sunday school teacher" collect eggs.
They also got to visit the horses and the cats so it was a pretty exciting day!

She told me she was working on her self portrait.  Ummm... ooookaaay... it looks like a square to me, but I won't try and discourage her artistic endeavors.... then she held it up to her face.  😂 Ohhhh!  Yes, that is an EXCELLENT self portrait!

Finally, finally it was somebody's 9th birthday!!  Grandpa and Grandma and Sharon dropped off her heart's greatest desire- Lego Friends Summer Fun Waterpark that we heard about for weeks and weeks.
She wanted a Lightfury dragon cake.
How is she nine already?!

One can never have too many dragons, apparently.

On Sunday we went to the farm for a quick birthday party; the girls got to stay for the evening while Bob and I went to communion.
She needed a picture with her waterpark.
We've been enjoying the warmer days after some cold days.
Yet another dragon came in the mail. 😜
Poor Cecily always has an audience- she got a pizza pillow kit for her birthday and the peanut gallery needed to be right there to help.
Emmy is so ambitious and domestic.  Ruth sent us home with a pumpkin, and when I got it cooked and pureed, we neeeeded to bake a pie.
Cadence cracks me up: "It sounds like the ocean is calling!"  Most of this ice-cream-bucket-O'shells came from Kentucky Lake, but, ok.  :)

 Blessings.
