This afternoon Shelly decided that she wanted to carve a pumpkin, which made me hungry for pumpkin pie. So I pulled out The Farm Journal Complete Pie Cookbook to see if I could figure out how to make a real pumpkin pie without that canned stuff since we have real pumpkins. As I was perusing recipes, one for squash pie caught my eye. Since a) I've never had squash pie, b) it sounded interesting, and c) the pumpkins were in the garden and the squash were on the porch and I was too lazy to go all the way out there... I decided to try squash. It was fun! I had to roast it first and then puree it and then add a bunch of good stuff. It tasted a lot like pumpkin. Mom said that Grandma used to make squash pie and called it "poor man's pumpkin." I'm not sure how Dad feels about it... we didn't tell him what it was and he doesn't like squash. :)
